Paul and Carolyn Beavers grow choose-and-cut Christmas trees at Trafford, roughly twenty-five miles northeast of Birmingham. What is in the field is Virginia pine, white pine, Carolina Sapphire, Blue Ice and Leyland cypress. No Fraser firs — those are shipped-in trees and this is a cut-your-own farm.
They hand you a saw, and they shake and net the tree when you bring it up. There are fresh wreaths and hot chocolate at the shed.
Cash and checks only. The farm opens on selected weekend dates from late November into mid-December, nine to five, and closes between seasons — the dates move every year, so read their page before you load the family up.
